The General and The Poet
[Genealogy] :
Albert Sidney Johnston and Sidney Lanier: A Luminary Follows a Star.
[S.l. :
Naylor Company,
1937.
63 p.
There is a striking parallel in the lives of Albert Sidney Johnston, the general, and Sidney Lanier, the poet, although diverse in many respects. Johnston loved all things military yet valued citizenship the greater honor. Lanier hated all wars yet discharged his duty to the utmost because of his devotion to his ideals. Each sought the High Goal but on different arcs of the circle. Decades have passed since the Battle of Shiloh, and now that the smoke-clouds have cleared we are able to take a dispassioned view of those tumultuous times.
